83 chevy s-10 back axel is in the top of the leaf springs can I put the axel under the leaf spring to gain lif?

I have a 83 s-10 4by4 pickup want to raise it 3 to 4 inches higher.I want to see if i can put the back axel under the leaf spring, it is now stock axel on "top" of leaf spring.Looks like it would go underneath with no problem.And then I can add like a 3inch steel block and longer "u" bolts.Trying not to spend 3 or 4 hundred on a lift kit. Any help will be useful...thanks
